Graphics make or break a game?

Recently, I've been checking out videos for the upcoming game Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a game I'm interested in purchasing.

I've got to say, I'm really amazed by comments on this YouTube video called Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director Commentary. So many people are complaining about how the graphics aren't amazing as hell. It makes me wonder if that's all people care about in gaming anymore - graphics.

Is that the only reason a lot of people purchase games? For their graphics? What about story? Playability? Do none of those things matter anymore to gamers? I'll admit that graphics are great to have, but you can't just judge an entire game because of something like graphics. It may not have the most amazing graphics that people seem to be expecting from the game (although, they look amazing to me, so I'm not sure what I'm missing), but come on, graphics are not the ONLY reason you buy a game. Sure, graphics would matter if the game had no story and was never ending...actually, that's not true. Games like the Sims and Animal Crossing aren't amazing looking graphically, but that hasn't stopped them from being extremely enjoyable games to people.

Some gamer out there really needs to explain why a game sucks ass just because the graphical quality isn't as amazing as some other recent releases.

Well, there are 100s more, I'm sure. I'm just not in the mood to look through them all.

Now...someone explain to me why graphics make a game in people's minds now, and not gameplay or story or anything.

I know that the game may still suck, because no one really knows how a game will be until they actually play it, but I'm still going to purchase it and play it. There are games I've been told are complete crap, but I've actually ended up enjoying them. Final Fantasy XIII for example. It may not be the greatest game in the series, but I've actually enjoyed playing it. I'm sure plenty of people will think I'm stupid for enjoying that game, but I don't care.
