Not too long ago, I heard Mom's boyfriend talking to her about how there's supposedly a Tesco store built in Looe. In fact, this store is going to be built straight across the road from the Community School.
Now, I'm not sure what a lot of the local citizens as well as the local stores think about this, assuming they even know yet, but I sure as hell hope that like Mom they're completely against the building of it all. I'm against it because I can't see that anything good is going to come out of it. If it's built here, I can just see a lot of local businesses going out of business.
I currently know of one person who is completely for the Tesco being built because I heard him arguing with Mom about it. It's really sad that someone who lives around here is completely FOR something like that. Clearly, he doesn't give a flying fuck about the town.
100+ houses are going to be built too due to this Tesco being built, which will make getting around the streets here harder. Also, due to that, it'll mean the two schools here won't be large enough for people. Why? Well, if 100+ families moved here, all with kids etc, then the schools aren't going to be able to cope with the increase of students. That means that the two schools will most likely have to be closed/knocked down (I heard Mom's boyfriend arguing with Mom about that too), in order to be made larger than before.
The question is, if that happens, where are the studen.ts currently going to school at Looe Primary School and Looe Community School going to go to school to? They won't be able to attend those schools for a couple of years while they're being made larger, if that's all going to happen. This is something I hope will get everyone in town turning completely against this proposed plan. Are parents really going to want to drive their kids all over Devon and Cornwall to attend other schools? If not drive, then pay for buses, taxis and/or train fare for their kids to be able to get to those schools?
This whole fucking plan is insane.
According to whatever Mom's boyfriend was reading (I've no idea what site it was reported on), the whole thing has already been "passed". If that's true, were any locals asked for their thoughts on it? If any were, did they seriously agree to have it built? Were they excited about it? I seriously hope it's a fucking joke, or that the locals are going to have a say in it, if they haven't already, and tell them "FUCK OFF!".
It shouldn't really be any surprise that Mom's boyfriend is excited about it all. He seems overjoyed that the schools may be knocked down to be made larger; that they're going to make St. Martins/Sunrising/Barbican a total nightmare to travel on; that this may end up putting 100s of local businesses out of business. The last thing Looe needs is a huge fucking supermarket and 100s more houses. With the location it's being build at, a few warehouses for local businesses may end up being destroyed. The sports field where some people play local football matches or walk their dogs - that'll either be reduced in size, MAJORLY, or completely gone for good to make room for the "new road" and car park for Tesco.
If anyone gives a fuck about the local beauty of the area (even if there isn't too much to do), then you'll attempt to protest against this if it's actually being proposed. Don't let the local schools and more than likely several local businesses be completely destroyed for a fucking Tesco.
Additional: Mom came up with a valid point about this whole Tesco thing earlier. If you want a real good example of how Looe may end up, take a look at Liskeard. Last time I visited, several businesses were closed down. It kind of went from being sort of busy-like on this one street, to becoming a total ghost town.
I can actually picture that happening to Looe. I've already seen Looe look like a ghost town, only that wasn't due to a lot of businesses being closed. What had happened at that time was the death of Princess Diana. I went into town the day after it had happened with my brother, and the town basically looked completely abandoned. It was creepy; extremely silent.
Would locals really like to see that happen?
I'm sure some locals will argue that 100+ more houses will mean more accomodation for us, but what are the chances you'd be able to afford those places? Some may argue that it'll bring in more jobs too, but think about that. If it were to open, loads of local businesses may close, meaning there wouldn't be able MORE jobs, there would be even less jobs.
