HEARTBROKEN mum Becky Lynch sobbed yesterday after learning that a dog pictured in The Sun hanging from a tree was her beloved dalmatian Spot.
Our horrific photo of the dead pet on Tuesday outraged the nation - and brought calls for the sadistic culprit to be given a lengthy jail sentence.
Becky, a bank customer services officer, was given Spot as a birthday gift by her partner Andy Hartley.
She said: "He was my beautiful birthday boy. How anyone could do this to a lovable animal defies belief.
"If they catch the people responsible they should lock them up and throw away the key. If whoever responsible can do this to an innocent dog, what on earth could they do to a child?"
The Sun put up a £5,000 reward to nail whoever who tied a rope with a noose on the end 20ft up a silver birch tree - and then let tormented Spot dangle.
His body was found in a copse at remote Carlton Marsh nature reserve at Cudworth near Barnsley, South Yorks, on Wednesday last week.
But Becky, 32, and Andy, 35, only learned the truth yesterday afternoon in a phone call from the RSPCA following a harrowing 18-hour wait.
LovableA scanner check on the dead dog's identity microchip had finally confirmed it was Spot.
Andy hugged Becky as she broke down in tears.
He said: "Spot was just an 11 month old - big, boisterous and full of mischief.
"He was a lovable dog but was always looking for an opportunity to escape and explore. Last Wednesday he bounded through the open door and squeezed through a gap in railings at the front of the house."
Andy searched the neighbourhood for Spot. The couple's two sons James, 12 and Ben, six, joined in the hunt and sought help from school pals.
Andy reported Spot missing to Barnsley police. But he and Becky got their first clue to Spot's fate when they sure the ghastly picture.
Andy said: "It was horrifying to learn that way. We'd heard nothing from the police."
Becky said yesterday: "We are still in deep shock. We were praying the dog in the picture was not Spot. But we live only two miles from the scene and the formation of the spots was exactly the same as Spot's.
"We had to brace ourselves because there were just too many coincidences."
TrustAndy said: "The sickening thing is, Spot would have run to a stranger. He loved to be patted - and to think that somebody took advantage of that trust to kill him turns my stomach."
Becky told how Andy took her on a surprise trip to a dog breeder to buy the puppy.
She said: "When the door opened I saw these delightful pups. Spot stood out from all the others because he had one blue eye and a brown eye. He had distinctive black spots where the others had brown ones. He was the pick of the litter. For me it was love at first sight."
The Sun visited the scene of the hanging yesterday and found the noose still there and two more on the ground.
Empty cider bottles and silver foil were strewn around. A tripod had been cut from saplings and used to dangle a cooking pot over a bonfire and there was a wind-break made from bushes.
Last night police and RSPCA officials were trying to track a weirdo reported living rough in the area. They were also investigating a claim that two youths had taken pictures of the hanging dog with mobile phone cameras and showing them off.
COPS are also hunting three sick "hoodie" yobs who hurled a live rabbit to an alligator, which tore it apart at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, Colwyn Bay.
PUT IN BAG, BEATEN TO DEATHTHIS kitten was put into a carrier bag then beaten to death with a wooden baton.
RSPCA experts were moved almost to tears when they removed the corpse.
Emma Jane Cherrett, 25, and her mother Patricia Smith, 47, were found guilty at Andover magistrates' court, Hampshire, of cruelty.
WEIGHED DOWN BY DUMBBELLTHIS pregnant cocker spaniel lies dead, a huge, 22lb dumbbell weight tied to her lead.
She was found submerged in a river near Southampton, RSPCA chiefs were appalled.
Despite a massive investigation, the person responsible was never found.
PUSS SHOT WITH A CROSSBOWPUCCINI, a five-year-old tom cat, miraculously survived after being shot through the neck with an arrow from a crossbow.
Her owner Ruth Morris, from Orleton, Ludlow, said: "How could anyone be so cruel - this is just inhuman!"
Surgeons successfully removed the arrow.
HOOVES LEFT TO GROW TO 20inNEGLECTED Mungo the pony had grotesque, twisted hooves 20 inches long when discovered by the RSPCA at filth-covered stables. She was pitifully weak through lack of food and exercise. Investigators in Northallerton, North Yorks, had to put her out of her misery. The owners were prosecuted.
HANGED FROM A SILVER BIRCHTHIS is The Sun picture that triggered the nation's anger toward the perpetrator. This once graceful dalmatian dog was hanged from a silver birch tree by a rope with a noose at the end.
The dog has been identified as Spot, beloved pet of Becky Lynch, given to her as a wedding present by her partner, Andy Hartley.
KNIFED UNTIL SHE LOST AN EYESOPHIE the tabby cat lost an eye when she was repeatedly stabbed by a maniac who was never found. Loving RSPCA carers in Penzance, Cornwall, nursed her gently back to health.
One official said: "She had lots of guts. Many an animal would have died after what she went through."
STARVED...TO FUR AND BONESPIPPA the dog is shown as she was found by the RSPCA in an outhouse in Tamworth, Staffs.
She weighed just 14lbs, scarcely had the strength to stand and was close to death.
A rescuer said: "She could barely wag her tail...all she could do was gaze at us with those terribly sad eyes. It was heartbreaking."

200 pets killed or maimed every day
This was not written by me. It was copied from a UK newspaper called The Sun. I do not have the pictures from it, but you're probably better off NOT seeing the images, especially if you're an animal lover like me. They were very sickening.
